Meppelink/Van Iersel draw Poland for first knockout round

The Hague, July 1, 2015 - Two of the four Dutch women’s teams participating in the event advance to the elimination rounds of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships The Netherlands 2015. Madelein Meppelink and Marleen van Iersel play Karolina Baran/Jagoda Gruszczynska from Poland tomorrow at 15.30 in The Hague. Sophie Van Gestel/Jantine Van der Vlist will take on the strong German team Katrin Holtwick/Ilka Semmler on Wednesday afternoon at 14.00 in Rotterdam.

Meppelink and van Iersel secured the top spot in Pool A on Sunday. They will continue to play in The Hague and will come out against Baran and Gruszczynska from Poland, who finished third in Pool K.

Van Gestel and Van der Vlist knew on Tuesday afternoon that they had to win their final pool match in order to have a chance of progressing to the elimination rounds. The second Dutch team defeated their opponents from Thailand in three sets and tropical weather.

The 2-1 victory turned out to be sufficient for Van Gestel and Van der Vlist, who join the best eight teams ending third. Van Gestel and Van der Vlist will move to Rotterdam, to play against Germans Holtwick/Semmler in the round of 32 at 14.00 on Wednesday afternoon.
