Spanish pair find confidence soaring after breakthrough gold

Amsterdam, the Netherlands, June 27, 2015 – Adrian Gavira and Pablo Herrera laid down an early marker at the Netherlands 2015, FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships with a straight-sets victory.

Spain’s leading men’s duo defeated Russian pair Oleg Stoyanovskiy and Artem Yarzutkin 2-0 (21-15, 21-19) and will now face Ghana pair Edward Seidu Ajanako and Jonathan Scott Sarpong before concluding their pool against 2003 world champions Emanuel Rego and Alison Cerutti.

“It was a good match for us and we are happy with the victory,” Gavira said. “Now we have to think about Ghana and get the win. Tomorrow we will think about Ghana, then we will think about Emanuel and Ricardo.”

Gavira and Herrera recently made a major breakthrough in their seven-year partnership, when they won their first FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour gold medal, at the Moscow Grand Slam.

It means they start the World Championships full of confidence, something their opening victory served to enhance.

“Of course we are confident,” Adrian added. “We are playing well and feeling good in ourselves. We are serving well and side-outing well and in this match I think we blocked and worked hard on our defence."
