Qataris move on to quarter-finals

Amsterdam, the Netherlands, July 2, 2015 – Jefferson Santos Pereira and Cherif Younousse continued their impressive run at the Netherlands 2015, FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships when they reached the quarterfinals on Thursday.

The Qatari pair beat Switzerland’s Philip Gabathuler and Mirco Gerson 2-0 (21-15, 21-15) to set up a clash against USA’s Nick Lucena and Theo Brunner, who eliminated Brazil’s Emanuel Rego and Ricardo Santos 2-1 (18-21, 21-18, 15-11).

"We are getting more confident because we won yesterday and today,” Jefferson said. “Nobody knows us because we haven't played a lot before, but we are doing a great job.

“We now have to take a bit of rest and tonight we will see what happens during the quarterfinals.”

Lucena and Brunner continued their impressive run in Amsterdam, but had to fight back from losing the opening set to defeat the 2003 world champions.

“We tried to stay as steady as we could,” Brunner said. “We knew we could come back. We played solid and you saw what happened. We are happy that we could get the win. It is awesome. It is really cool to win this match. Playing against that team and winning in this tournament is just awesome.

“We are going to look at the match tonight exactly like we do on every match. We are not focussing on winning. We just focus on the match itself. It is our tactic. We used to focus on winning and we lost every match. Now we focus on the match and the process works out for us.”
