Reinder Nummerdor and Christiaan Varenhorst have qualified for the semifinals of the World Cup Beach Volleyball. The Dutch defeated in the quarterfinals the American duo Hyden / Bourne 2-0. Saturday at 12:00 they play the semifinal against the Brazilians Pedro / Evandro.
The quarter-final on center court at the Hofvijver was played by two teams that are very similar in composition. Like Nummerdor (38 years) and Varenhorst (25 years), there is also the American team out of an old and a young player. John Hyden, with 42 years the oldest participant at the World Cup, playing along with the 26-year-old Tri Bourne. In a high quality match Nummerdor and Varenhorst made the service in the first set. Nummerdor defended like a tiger and had great success with his offensive 'shots'. Varenhorst blocked strong and used with this specialty the third set point (23-21). In the second set, the Americans took a 13-9 lead. A great series points Netherlands brought back to 13-13 after Nummerdor and Varenhorst of minutes later with 23-21 completers. Varenhorst said afterwards praised his team-mate: "Reinder could showcase its strength considerably. He is one of the best defenders in the world, maybe even the best. That he has shown tonight and over again. Nummerdor was happy afterwards, but with some reservations: "I have at the Olympics experienced how it is to reach the semi-finals and with nothing to go home. We have to do it at first, the coin is not yet in. " Nummerdor and Varenhorst had earlier in the day in the eighth finals the Russians Semenov / Krasilnikov with 2-1 records. After the easy win in the first set gave the first-seeded Dutch in the second set a 14-9 lead in hands. Thanks to a strong blocking Varenhorst was convincingly won the third set 15-12.
